Stolypin’s agricultural reforms 1906-11 challenged the authority of the Mir. Included - abolishing redemption payments, could leave the Mir.
By 1917, 7million households (almost half of total in Russia) held their land in private tenure

Rapid urbanisation led to increased poverty

Bloody Sunday, Jan 1905 - At least 150 protesters over working conditions killed by troops. Image of the Tsar as the caring ‘Little Father’ was shattered. General strike across the country in October. Nicholas forced to issue the October Manifesto - Duma created.

More challenges to Tsarist authority. The loss couldn’t be blamed on serfdom this time. Image of Russian strength through Tsarism was shattered. Plehve assassinated in 1904. Grand Duke Sergei in 1905.

Duma set up, first national parliament in Russian history

Rise of new political factions - Mensheviks & Bolsheviks both held conferences (Geneva & London respectively)

Sharpened economic recession. Military expenditure rose by 50% in a time when output and gov. revenue was falling

Trans-Siberian railway ineffective in transporting troops and supplies, despite all the investment.

Japan had westernised & industrialised in the 19th century, and was far more advanced than Russia. It was clear a period of urbanisation was needed in Russia.
