Why did the Schlieffen plan fail 4 reasons

A

Battle of Mons 23rd-24th august 1914 - British forces slowed German advance by 48 hours

Collapse of plan 17 - french armies failed to recapture Alsace-Lorraine but slowed the German advance by 2 weeks

Battle of the Marne 5th-11th September 1914 - were not strong enough to take Paris and were pushed back to river Aisne by french and British forces

Russian mobilisation - mobilised quickly and on 19th august invaded eastern Germany leading to German troops on western front having to move

Battle of the Somme July 1916

A

Germany attacked verdun in 1916

By July French had lost 542,000 men

French could not give yup because verdun was crucial

Planes were used to try shell German trenches but Germans were aware of the advance 1.73 million shells wasted

General Haig relived pressure on the french troops by fighting the Germans from the east.

Battle of Paschendale July 1917

A

Haig wanted to capture naval bases at blackenberge and Ostend to make it harder for Germans to make submarine attacks

Lack of trust due to high casualties in the Somme

Was a joint British and Canadian offensive

Extremely muddy and wet conditions

Haig claimed small victory as the allies captured paschendale

Allies only gained 800m

240,000 British soldiers died

1917 Russia signed peace treaty because of revolutions in Russia

USA would take time to train and get to Europe

Planned to brake stalemate
Used mustard gas to kill allies then storm troopers followed and killed the survivors
Now the allied forces came together to try fight the Germans but the Germans were too strong
