Q

Name two virtues of Wuthu.

A

Mentioned by Ibn Majah:
Prophet said that whilst performing wuthu, the drops of water falls along with sins.

Tirmidhi in his Jaami’ (collection of hadeeth):
Prophet said:
“I saw my lord in my sleep,
Allah said ‘do you know what the angles are talking about?’ “
The prophet replied ‘No’.
Allah placed his hand on the prophet’s chest until he felt cold, Allah said ‘Now?’,
The prophet replied: ‘yes, angles are talking about the virtues of doing wuthu even when it is difficult, walking to the masjid, waiting from salah to salah…’

Q

What are the 6 obligations of wuthu?

A

1) Intention (must intend to do wuthu before starting)
- Intention is to raise from oneself the state of hadath/ or know you need to do wuthu in order to pray.

2) Washing the face
- Wash not wipe.
- Face = From original hairline (not receding hairline) to chin, from ear to ear.

+ Shafi’ opinion: mouth and nose are sunnah
+ Hanbali opinion (stronger opinion): mouth and nose are part of the face.

3) Beard
- If thick, just wash over it
- If thin (skin can be seen) then ensure the skin gets washed.

4) Washing hands including elbows (hand and elbow, it doesn’t matter if you washed hands at the start, need to do it again)
- Wash not wipe

5) Wiping the head
- run fingers from front to back
- wipe not wash
- This includes the ears

6) Needs to be done in the above order

A

O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of janābah,1 then purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women2 and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it. Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you that you may be grateful.
