Water Flashcards
What is Tahara?
Purification. To raise from oneself the state of spiritual impurity (Hadath) and physical impurity (khabath).
What are the two types of Hadath and what do they require?
Major hadath - requires ghusl
Minor hadath - requires wuthu
Allah does not accept the prayer of anyone without ‘____’ ?
Wuthu.
What do we use to purify?
Water
What are the 7 types of water?
1 - water from rain 2 - water from sea/river 3 - water from wells 4 - water from springs 5 - water from ice 6 - water from frost 7 - water from snow
What is the Ma’qid (principle) we use when using water?
All water is permissible to use for purification unless proven that it is impure.
What does ‘mutahir’ mean?
Something that [can be used] purifies
What are the 4 categories of water?
1 - Water that is pure in and of itself
2 - Water that is pure but left in the sun in an aluminium container
3 - Water that is pure but cannot be used to purify
4 - Water that is impure
What does it mean:
“Water that is pure in and of itself”?
- Water that can be used to purify
- It is not disliked to use
- If this water goes on your clothes you don’t need to wash it off
Water is found on the ground and it is brown in colour.
Can this water be used for purification?
If there is no evidence of impurity (colour is not a sign), Yes.
Take certainty over doubt; use the principle: All water is pure until proven to be impure.
What does it mean:
“Water that is pure but left in the sun in an aluminium container”?
This water can be used for purification but is makroo’ (disliked)
- It was thought that using water left in sun in aluminum container causes leprosy.
General ruling that is derived:
Any water that is said to be medically harmful is makroo’.
What does it mean:
“Water that is pure but cannot be used to purify”?
[There are two types]
Type A:
- Water that has been used by someone else for wuthu. The water is pure but cannot be used for tahara (purification). Evidence used is that sins fall off a person as they do wuthu so you can’t use it.
Other opinions say you can use this water for purification but Imaam Shafi’s opinion says you can not.
Type B:
- Pure water that has been mixed/changed with/by a pure substance. E.g water+orange juice.
- This type is pure (no ned to wash off clothes for salah) but cannot be used for purification
What does it mean:
“Water that is impure”?
Water that is impure in and of itself
- If this type goes on your clothes you need to wash before you can pray.
What are the two amounts of water and what are their quantities?
1) Alot of water - More than 2 Qullah’s (Qulatayn)
2) A little amount of water - Less than 2 Qullah’s
1 Qullah = approx. 96 litres
Qulatayn = approx. 190 litres
Situation:
If an impure substance falls into a lot of water (>= Qulatayn), is the water still pure?
If the colour, smell and taste do not change then it is still pure.
