What is Istinja?
The cleaning of the private parts after using the toilet.
The prophet (SAW) walked past two graves and said: These two graves are being punished.
What are the reasons?
1) One of them used the toilet and never protected himself from the urine/splashes.
2) The other one walks around and spreads gossip/backbiting. (Major sin)

What does one use when doing istinjaa?
Water, tissue, smooth rocks
Anything that cleans and not spreads
What is the minimum number of times to wipe/clean yourself?
- What is the sunnah
3 is the minimum (i.e use 3 sides of a rock or 3 tissue pieces)
- Sunnah is to stop at an odd number.

One should never have their front or back facing towards the ka’ba when using the toilet.

The hadeeth that mentions this is only specific if you are in an open desert or land.
- If you are inside a cubicle or home, then it is fine.
Why should one not urinate in a bath or pool of water that does not flow?
Because no one will be able to use it later.
Why should you not relief yourself under a tree?
Fruit from the tree will be affected e.g fruits falls onto the najas.
Why should you not urinate in public places (e.g roads)
Beware of things that cause people to curse you:
- those who urinate in public
- those who urinate in the shade (which people use)
Is it permissible to urinate inside an animal hole or habitat?
No, it is the right of the animal.
Also, the animal may come out and harm you.
What should someone say whilst using the toilet?
Nothing, stay silent. Allah gets angry and does not like it if someone does that.
Why is it disliked to have your front or back towards the sun or the moon while using the toilet?
Oppinions of Imaam Shaafi’ and Imaam Ahmad:
- Because the light would increase your chances of being seen.
- Stronger opinion is that is not disliked.
