Words or phrases that show the connection between ideas
Narrative text
Fictional stories, plays, poems.
Usually contains some element of plot or conflict
Organizational structure
Text structure can include cause/effect, problem/solution, main idea/details and/or sequence
Drama
Serious and thought provoking dramatic literature
Compare and contrast
Organizational approach where author provides similarities and differences about two ideas
Cause and effect
Writing method in which author explains reasons why something happened or the effects of something that has happened.
Claim and refutation
Organizational approach where author argues against a statement, fact, or claim.
Poetry
Creative writing in verse and often including rhymes or heavy use of figurative language.
Genre
Various forms of text including short stories, essays, folk tales, fairy tales, poetry, historical fiction, biographies, memoirs, etc
Nonfiction
Writing based on factual information, may tell a story or give information.
Spatial order
Organizational approach where ideas are arranged related to physical space.
Fiction
Writing that describes imaginary events and or people
Order of importance
Organizational approach where ideas are arranged with most important claim at top or bottom
Memoir
Story or account of someone’s life
Problem and solution
Organizational approach where author presents a problem and a possible solution
