Wrist/Hand Orthopedic Tests Flashcards
Bracelet Test
Compression causes acute forearm, wrist, and hand pain
Indicates RA
Bunnel-Littler Test
PIP joint cannot be flexed indicates a tight intrinsic muscle or contracture of the joint capsule=positive
Finkelstein Test
Action produces pain over abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis tendons at wrist
Indicates tenosynovitis
Froment Paper Sign
Failure to maintain the grip when paper is pulled away indicates ulnar nerve paralysis
Phalen Sign/Reverse Phalen Sign
Tingling sensations that radiate into thumb, index finger and middle and lateral half of ring finger
Indicates carpal tunnel syndrome caused by median nerve compression
Pinch Grip Test
Pt is unable to pinch tip to tip and has a pulp-to-pulp pinch of index finger and thumb, sign for anterior interosseous nerve syndrome
Tight Retinacular Ligament Test
If DIP does not flex, ligaments or capsule are tight or contracted
If PIP flexes easily, ligaments are tight but capsule is normal
Tinel Sign (median nerve/tunnel of Guyon)
Tingling and paresthesia must be felt distal to point of percussion for positive finding
Wringing Test
Paresthesia in hand indicates CTS
Pain elicited at elbow indicates epicondylitis
Wrist discomfort indicates arthropathy or carpal derangement
