Wrist and Hand Flashcards
Trigger Finger
• What is it?
◦ Condition in which one of your fingers gets stuck in a bent position
◦ Inflammation narrows the space within the sheath that surrounds the tendon
◦ Finger stiffness occurs in the morning
Trigger Finger
• Prevalence
◦ Most common in women and usually develops at ages 50-60
Trigger Finger
• Risk Factors
◦ Occupation that involves repetitive hand use and prolonged gripping may increase your risk of trigger finger
Cubital Tunnel Syndrome/Ulnar Nerve Entrapment
• What is it
◦ Peripheral nerve compression, which is the second most common compression neuropathy in the upper extremity after carpal tunnel syndrome
◦ Cubital Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the ulnar nerve in the arm becomes compressed or irritated. This makes the hand and fingers numb when performing daily tasks and may cause weakness within muscles.
Cubital tunnel
- Prevalence
◦ Common in both males and females with no specific age for onset
Cubital tunnel
• Risk factors
◦ Overhead throwing activities can affect this
◦ Obesity can also play a risk
◦ Resting elbows on a hard surface such as a desk job
MS
• What is it?
◦ Potentially disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord
◦ The immune system attacks the protective sheath that covers the nerve fibers and causes issues between the brain and the rest of the body
MS
• Prevalence
◦ Can occur at any age but onset usually occurs around 20-40 years of age
◦ Women are more likely to get MS than men
◦ Northern European descent are at highest risk
MS
• Risk Factors
◦ Smoking can contribute towards MS
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
• What is it?
◦ Compression of the median nerve
◦ Median nerve runs through the forearm through a passageway in the wrist (carpal tunnel) to your hand, These nerves supply the fingers for movement and muscle control
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
• Prevalence
◦ More common in women than men
◦ Affects people between 40-60 years old
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
• Risk Factors
◦ Working with vibrating tools and repetitive flexion of the wrist can create harmful pressure on the median nerve
