Wound definitions/Lab values Flashcards
Contamination
non-replicating bacteria on wound surface without any effect upon healing
Colonization
presence of replicating bacteria attached to wound surface with no harm to the host and not effect on wound
Critical colonization
replicating bacteria on wound with numbers to visibly affect wound
Infection
replicating bacteria that have invaded surrounding tissue with visible effects in wound healing process and in periwound tissues.
Sepsis
whole-body inflammatory state
WBC
increased- infection
decreased- healing
Platelets
increased-infection
decreased- bleeding
Coagulation
increased-bleeding
Glucose and HBA1C
increased- impaired healing, infection
Serum Albumin
decreased- protein deficiency/malnutrition (decreased healing)
Prealbumin
decreased- mortality increases. (shows effect of nutritional interventions)
