What are the two ways obesity can be classified?
BMI and waist circumference
What are some other diseases that obese patient are at risk for?
HTN, diabetes, CVD, stroke, gall bladder, respiratory, cancer
What is metabolic syndrome?
Group of conditions that lead to the development of CVD and type 2 DM
How is metabolic syndrome defined?
3 or more of the following:
waist circumference (35 for women, 40 for men)
fasting glucose (use of meds or 100 mg/dl)
triglycerides (150)
blood pressure (greater than or equal to 130/85)
HDL (men 40, women 50)
Two groups for weight distribution?
apple or pear
Difference between apple pannus vs. ascites
pannus- stomach goes inferior
ascites- large abdomen
Difference between pear abduction and adduction?
abd- knee valgus with large hips
add- knee varus with large hips
