What is prayer?
Communicating with God - talking and listening
Christians believe they are in the presence of God when they pray
Raising the heart and mind to god
Jesus on the cross prayed offering himself to god
St.Paul said prayer comes from the Holy Spirit
What are the different types of prayer and explain them?
Adoration- praise and honouring God
Thanksgiving - thanking God for everything he has given
Confession- admitting mistakes, repenting, promising not to do it again
Intercession- praying for others
Petition - pray for ones own needs
What is mediation?
Quiet peaceful prayer
Focus thoughts on god
Simply being with god
Rosary is a form of mediation
What is the Jesus prayer?
“Lord Jesus Christ son of god have mercy on me a sinner”
Not a formal prayer
Cry for help
Used for meditation
Silent arrow prayer any time any where often in difficult situation
Eg blind Bartimaeus ( mark 10:46)
Ask and you will receive -explain?
Jesus was close to god and god always listened
Matthew 7:7-8 seek and you will find
God will do what is best
God answers prayers
Prayer not a quick fix -work with god to achieve what is being asked for
What is the formal approach to prayers?
Everyone uses the same words often said as a group
Eg Lord’s Prayer, Hail Mary and Nicene Creed
These are traditional prayers handed down through generations
Familiar words bring comfort when people are upset
What is the informal approach to prayers?
Individual talks to god in their own words
At home or in small groups not during mass
This is spontaneous prayer - the spirit guides the words
Comes from the heart reflects how the person feels and their relationship with god
What is meant by the kingdom of god?
Mark 1:15 “the kingdom of god has come near, repent and believe in the good news”
Reign of god because it is not a place but idea of gods rule
Luke 17:12 “the kingdom of god is among you”
Established through Jesus’ resurrection and the Holy Spirit at Pentecost
The church is the sign of the kingdom on earth
Kingdom completed at end of time when all enjoy eternal happiness
What is the Lord’s Prayer or our father?
Jesus taught it to his disciples Matthew 6:9-13
