What is reconciliation?
The sacrament of reconciliation is known as penance or confession
A gift from god
He gives us strength and courage to say sorry and forgive
What is the background to reconciliation?
Jesus rose from the dead and told disciples “receive the Holy Spirit, if you forgive anyone your sins, they are forgiven”
What is individual reconciliation?
Speak privately to a priest, confess and ask for forgiveness
You speak to god through the priest
You make sign of the cross, priest blesses you and says prayer of absolution
What is communal reconciliation?
This allows communities to get together to prepare for festivals like Easter
There can be communal absolution or individual confession
What are the steps to reconciliation?
- Acknowledge our sins
- Accept we have done wrong
- Surrender ourselves to gods grace so he can heal us
What is sin?
A failure to love god and deliberately done wrong
Mortal sin is very serious and we know it is wrong
Venial sin less serious
Why do we confess?
When we sin we lose the state of grace
Reconciliation gives us grace and possibility of internal life
Reconciliation is gods gift of love to heal us
Gods love is sanctifying grace
What does the parable of the prodigal son?
The Son recognises he wrong-contrition
He tells the truth to his father-confession
He says sorry-satisfaction
His father forgives him-absolution
