What are the parts of the marriage ceremony?
- The questions-freely offer yourself,honour and love, accept children
- Exchange vows-to each other (the sacrament), priest witnesses
- Exchange rings-symbolises a never ending marriage and fidelity

- Signing the register with witnesses-makes marriage legal
What are the conditions of marriage?
- Freely chosen by the two people
- Two people must be free to marry-not already married
- Open to the possibility of having children
- The two people must understand it is a sacrament, a covenant/an agreement and an equal loving partnership
What marriage preparations are needed?
Couples attend marriage preparation with a priest
They discuss if they are ready for the lifelong
What is the role of the priest and the guests?
The priest is gods witness and leads the celebration
The guests are witnesses invited to support the couple through their life

- Wedding bells-with a clanging drives away evil
- Wedding cake-the sweetness of marriage
- Wedding dress-often white to symbolise purity
- Wear something blue-biblical colour of purity
- Rings-never ending love
- Tying the knot-the couple are symbolically tied together
- Giving the bride away-her care is passed from her father to groom
- bouquet thrown- floral symbol of marriage passing to next woman
- Confetti- symbol of fertility to shower with children
- Wedding veil - lifting to see bride may be for first time

- Church doors open - public occasion so anyone can object
Why get married - the key words?
Proceate - to have children and bring them up in stable home
Unity- unite couples and their families
Raising children
Pattern for society - a good example for a stable community
One - mutual support comfort and companionship
Sacred/sacrament
Eternity/ everlasting - religions say marriage shows commitment
Sex - many people believe marriage is best for intimacy and expression of love
How does the Bible portray marriage?
“A man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one fresh”
This is an argument for marriage before sex
In Genesis 2 “man should not be alone” so god creates eve
“You shall not commit a adultery”-this protects marriage
“Therefore what god has joined together, let man not separate” Mark 10:9
What is the meaning of the sacrament of marriage?
A sign of gods faithful love
An exclusive relationship-one partner
A lifelong relationship
Life giving-children are a gift from God
An act of great faith to accept each other
The fulfilment of sexuality and parent hood
What does the church teach about divorce?
The church says divorce can’t end a marriage between baptised people because it is a sacrament
The church says divorce is damaging to family life
“Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her” Mark 10:11
Remarriage can’t take place in a Catholic Church

What does the church say about separation and annulment?
Separation is allowed if there is emotional physical danger
Annulment is when the sacrament is not present at the time of marriage
Annulment can happen if the marriage was forced, there’s no intention to children or if the vows were not made in good faith
What other opinions does the church have about divorce?
Some say people make mistakes and god is forgiven
Some say divorce is allowed in adultery because adultery may mean ‘illicit marriage’
