Worm Egg Counts and Reduction Tests Flashcards
What is faecal egg counting
Methods used for detection and quantification of worm eggs in faecal samples
It is the cornerstone for the detection of GI parasites in all species
What is a FEC reduction test
Use to detect anthelmintic resistance
FEC on 2 samples- 1 at time of treatment, 2 at defined times after treatment, depending on anthelmintic group used:
3-7 days after using levamisole
8–10 days after using a benzimidazole
14–17 days after using a Macrocyclic lactones
If unsure or if testing all anthelmintic groups in the same flock, collect the 2nd faecal sample at day 14 post treatment
How many horses/sheep/cows on a farm minimum should be FEC as part of FECR test
6 horses
10 sheep
10 cows
What is the cut off for treatment efficacy to infer anthelmintic resistance
95%- resistance inferred if reduction in FEC is <95%
