Fine Needle Sampling Flashcards
What is cytology
study of cell number and type in a tissue mass or fluid accumulation, it investigate its cause (usually inflammatory or neoplastic)
Common types of cytological specimen (4)
Fine needle samples- capillary action sample or aspirate
Touch imprints- press glass slide against clean cut surface of lesion
Body Fluids
lavages
what is fine needle capillary sampling
FNCS
No suction used
Recommended
What is fine need aspiration
FNA
Minimal suction used
For cysts for failed FNCS
what can diagnostic cytology show (5)
Differentiation of inflammation from tissue growth (hyperplasia/neoplasia)
Differentiation of types of inflammation
Detect neoplasia- benign vs malignant, should indicate general type, may identify specific
Differentiation of different fluids- exudates, transudates
Advantages of cytology
Quick, safe, inexpensive
Limitations of cytology
Can be false negatives- issue with sampling technique or extensive necrosis/inflammation present
Can be false positive- dysplasia (occurs in inflammatory diseases, the abnormal growth or development of a tissue or organ) can mimic neoplasia
gives bricks not buildings
