Q

what can diagnostic cytology show (5)

A

Differentiation of inflammation from tissue growth (hyperplasia/neoplasia)
Differentiation of types of inflammation
Detect neoplasia- benign vs malignant, should indicate general type, may identify specific
Differentiation of different fluids- exudates, transudates

Q

Limitations of cytology

A

Can be false negatives- issue with sampling technique or extensive necrosis/inflammation present
Can be false positive- dysplasia (occurs in inflammatory diseases, the abnormal growth or development of a tissue or organ) can mimic neoplasia
gives bricks not buildings
