What was the Battle of Britain?
The RAF resisted the Luftwaffe over South East England from July to October 1940.
What was the Blitz?
A tactic used by the German army to bomb Britain into submission and lower morale from September 1940 to May 1941.
What were the most affected cities in the Blitz?
Belfast, Glasgow and Swansea.
When did evacuation begin?
1st September 1939, where 1.5 million children and pregnant women were evacuated.
Positives of evacuation?
~Saved many lives
~Many children saw the countryside for the first time
~Some developed emotional bonds and stayed in contact after war
Negatives of evacuation?
~Some were mistreated and abused, experiencing bed wetting and nightmares
~Hard transitioning to another culture and speaking a different language
~Fears of germs, lice and disease being brought to the countryside from slums
When was rationing introduced?
1940, and basic foods, meat, butter and sugar were rationed. Clothing was added in June 1941.
Positive of rationing?
Many people had better diets.
Negative of rationing?
Some people brought from black market traders who sold rationed goods at high prices.
