What was the ‘Means Test’?
After six months of being ‘on the dole’, families would have their houses inspected and deductions were made from weekly payments.
Reactions to the Means Test
- People claimed the government was trying to save money
- Felt it was humiliating
- Some people thought it was too harsh

1920, the government provided 39 weeks of benefits to the unemployed.
When was the Jarrow March?

What happened on the Jarrow March?
Two hundred men walked from Jarrow to London, covering 450km in 8 months.
What was ‘making ends meet’?
Stretching out what little money a family had. Mothers would often go without food, prioritising their children.
What was ‘self-help’?
Families and neighbours helping each other, they would pay rent and buy food and clothing for each other.
What was the Special Areas Act?
Where companies were payed grants by the government to set up in areas of mass unemployment to create jobs.

What was ‘light industry’?
Industry that was powered by electricity, not coal. Companies like Hoover and Ford produced consumer goods.
What was ‘heavy industry’?
Old industries that were becoming obsolete such as coal, steel and shipbuilding.
