What was the Beveridge report?
A report published by William Beveridge in 1942 which contained a series of recommendations on how to improve the country and outlined five giants.
What were the Five Giants?
Want, Disease, Ignorance, Squalor, Idleness.
What was the National Insurance Act of 1946?
Ensured the whole population for sickness and unemployment benefits, retirement and widows pension, maternity and death grants.
What did the Family Allowance Act do?
Paid money to mothers for every child in the family.
When was the NHS introduced?
1946 by Aneurin Bevan.
What did the NHS offer?
Free medical services such as opticians, dental care, child and maternity services.
Positives of the NHS?
~Tuberculosis infection rates declined
~Life expectancy increased by 10 years
Negatives of the NHS?
~It did not have the support of many doctors, who wished to remain private
~It was costly, with dental charges being introduced in 1951
What did the Education Act of 1944 do?
~Set the school leaving age to 15
~Set up the 11+ exam which determined wether students would go to a grammar, secondary or technical school
What did the โHomes for Allโ Act do?
~Built 800,000 new homes between 1946-51
~Added new towns like Stevenage and Cwmbran to reduce overcrowding
~Demolished slums
~Improved houses with baths and hot water
What was Nationalisation?
When the government took control and ran key industries, such as coal, railways and electricity.
What were the benefits of Nationalisation?
~Improved transportation in the UK
~Increased industrial production and output
~Better pay and conditions for workers
~Electrification of the countryside
