World War I Flashcards
The Triple Alliance, which was created by Otto von Bismarck in 1882 and consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy, evolved into World War I’s Central Powers (or Quadruple Alliance). As Italy remained neutral at the war’s onset, the Central Powers consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and two new allies. Name either one.
Bulgaria, Ottoman Empire
Site of an arduous WWI campaign, this town on the Dardanelles gets its name from the Greek for “beautiful city.”
Gallipoli
This September 1914 battle ended with an Allied victory over the Germans. It marked, however, a long period of trench warfare along the war’s western front. The battle is named after the French river near which it took place.
First Battle of the Marne
This 1916 North Sea battle was the largest naval battle to take place during WWI. It ultimately resulted in British control of shipping lanes and was a foundation for the blockade that would contribute to German defeat in 1918. It is named after the peninsula that forms the continental portion of Denmark and part of northern Germany.
Battle of Jutland
Not to be confused with the Ardennes, this French forest was the site of the biggest WWI battle fought by the American Expeditionary Forces.
