A

Germany attacked Belgium, this meant that Britain had to protect Belgium at any cost since it was a neutral country.

A

The British and French fought together to overcome the Germans, this led to the trench welfare.

Why were the Trenches dangerous?

A

You could easily be targeted by aeroplanes from above and also if you lifted your head you could be easily shot.

What sort of equipment was used? Why?

A

Parapet - To keep soldiers safe and protect them from being shot.
Barbed Wire - To make it difficult for enemy soldiers to attack.
Sandbags - were used to support the walls of the trench, which often caved in.

In what ways was Europe ‘set out for war’ in 1914?

A

The empires started to suspect therefore formed two main sets of allies : the triple alliance consisted of Germany, Austria and Italy and the triple Entente consisted of Britain, Russia and France.

What was meant by the ‘Lions’ and the ‘Donkeys’?

A

The ‘Lions’ were the British people - strong and ferocious, who put their lives at risk whilst the ‘Donkeys’ were the Generals - stupid, they thought of dumb ideas and led the soldiers into it which obviously cost so many lives.

A

The Home - Front consists of the people who were playing a part in the war, not those were fighting.

How were the lives of civilians affected?

A

> The Germans attacked merchant ships which contained food, since Britain relied on exported food is was soon starting to starve.
Since Beer would intoxicate soldiers and cause them to be drunk, the government decided to put water in beer. This applied to everyone.
Women were relied on to take care of male jobs which they then were rewarded and received the vote (over the age of 30)
Many families were affected as the zeppelin airships killed nearly 1,400 people and injured 3,300.

A

Germany surrendered because they starved in submission.

What was the treaty of Versailles?

A

It was contract in which Germany was forbidden to reunite with Austria and all of the colonies were taken away from them. They also lost acres of land.
