Zimmerman Note

A

Cable sent from Germany to Mexico. Said that if Mexico joined the battle then Mexico would gain their territory they lost to the US. This note was intercepted by the United States, and public outrage led to Woodrow Wilson declaring war.

Lusitania

A

The Lusitania was a ship believed to be carrying weapon. Germans warned Americans that if they went on the ship, they would be sunk. Americans went on the ship anyways, and Germany sunk it. This outraged the Americans, leading Woodrow Wilson to prepare for war and Germans to cut back on their submarine attacks.

The Maxim Machine Gun, developed by Hiram Maxim, had been used primarily in Africa against Africans. However, in WW1, for the first time ever the machine guns were used against each other, resulting in devastating losses for both sides.

Chemical Warfare

A

Due to the trenches, both sides struggled to attack the other. The solution was to use chemical weapons to attack the others despite them hiding in trenches. This was mainly used by Germany. Chemical weapons such as chlorine and mustard gas were used.

Treaty of Brest-Litsvok

A

Peace treaty signed between Germany and the newly formed Soviet Union. The treaty was harsh on Russia. The treaty also helped Germany as now they were only fighting a war on one front.

Due to the treaty, Russia lost control of:
-1.3 million acres of territory
-63 million people
-1/4 of the railroad network
-1/3 of the farmland
-3/4 of the coal and iron deposits
-1/3 of the factories

Wilson’s 14 Points

A

14 points proposed by Woodrow Wilson to be added to the Treaty of Versailles.
Some of these points included:
- Open Diplomacy
- Removal of Trade Barriers
- Open Seas
- Reduction of Armaments
- Impartial adjustment of colonies based on the opinion of the colonized.

A

Wilson’s 14th point, would be similar to the UN we have today. Shot down by Congress, led by Henry Cabot Lodge, who wanted to follow Washington’s standard of remaining neutral.

German Reparations

A

Germany was charged $33 billion in war reparations. However, Germany could not afford this, meaning that England and France wouldn’t be able to repay the US, meaning that the world would fall into the Great Depression.

Treaty of Versailles

A

Rough for Germans, it:
-Lowered their army to 1000 people
-Gave France the Alsace-Lorraine Region
-Gave the Allies all of Germany’s colonies
-Said Germany was at fault for the war and made Germany responsible for paying reparations.

Reconciliation vs. Retribution with the Treaty of Versailles

A

Woodrow Wilson wanted reconciliation, with a focus on preventing another war from happening. However, Georges Clemenceau from France wanted retribution, making Germany suffer for the war.
