World War 1 Flashcards
The Triple Entende
France, Russia, Great Britain, allies of the US.
The Triple Alliance
Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy
Gavrilo Princip
Serbian nationalist who, when he was 16, shot Archduke Franz Ferdinand, starting WW1.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Leader of Austria-Hungary, got shot by Gavrilo Princip and the war started after his assassination.
Trench Warfare
Trenches were dug by both sides in WW1, this was done because people couldn’t flank the others so they hunkered down.
Barbed Wire
Would line trenches, one of the new technological innovations that played a significant part in the world.
No Man’s Land
Space between both the trenches, there were mines, barbed wire, and other things that made it impossible to go from one trench to another.
Verdun
Before the war it was a beautiful place, after the war it was grey, desolate, and filled with craters and death. France alone lost 500k at the battle.
“He Kept Us Out Of War”
Woodrow Wilson’s slogan for reelection, the slogan came from Woodrow Wilson declaring neutrality during his first term.
Woodrow Wilson
Elected in 1912, he declared neutrality towards the war. When he was re-elected, he declared war after the Zimmerman Note.
Zimmerman Note
Cable sent from Germany to Mexico. Said that if Mexico joined the battle then Mexico would gain their territory they lost to the US. This note was intercepted by the United States, and public outrage led to Woodrow Wilson declaring war.
Lusitania
The Lusitania was a ship believed to be carrying weapon. Germans warned Americans that if they went on the ship, they would be sunk. Americans went on the ship anyways, and Germany sunk it. This outraged the Americans, leading Woodrow Wilson to prepare for war and Germans to cut back on their submarine attacks.
Maxim Machine Gun
The Maxim Machine Gun, developed by Hiram Maxim, had been used primarily in Africa against Africans. However, in WW1, for the first time ever the machine guns were used against each other, resulting in devastating losses for both sides.
Chemical Warfare
Due to the trenches, both sides struggled to attack the other. The solution was to use chemical weapons to attack the others despite them hiding in trenches. This was mainly used by Germany. Chemical weapons such as chlorine and mustard gas were used.
Treaty of Brest-Litsvok
Peace treaty signed between Germany and the newly formed Soviet Union. The treaty was harsh on Russia. The treaty also helped Germany as now they were only fighting a war on one front.
Due to the treaty, Russia lost control of:
-1.3 million acres of territory
-63 million people
-1/4 of the railroad network
-1/3 of the farmland
-3/4 of the coal and iron deposits
-1/3 of the factories
