in December 2012 the chief nursing officer for England launched a 3 year strategy for all nurses and midwives entitled -Compassion in Practice’, based around the focus of 6 key values known as the Chief Nursing Officers 6Cs
What are the 6Cs?
- communication

What is communication?
communication is central to the caring relationship, particularly the ability to listen carefully to service users
What is courage?
courage to always do the right thing for service users and to speak up when there are concerns, particularly poor practice
What is care?
care is at the heart and core of the health and care professions, ensuring that the care provided is right for the client throughout their lifespan
What is commitment?
commitment means that the vision for service users can be realised, and needs of the service users consistently met
What is competence?
competence means ensuring that staff are able to understand their service users’ needs, and have the up-to-fate expertise and knowledge to deliver effective care and support
What is compassion?
compassion for service users and their carers must be based on empathy, respect and dignity
What are the 6Cs now incorporated into?
the 6Cs are now incorporated into the Introductory Care Certificate for healthcare support workers and adult social care workers that was introduced in April 2015

the overall aim of all health and care provision is to meet the individual needs of service users
