Where did people with physical and sensory disabilities live prior to the 1990 Community Care Act?
prior to the 1990 Community Care Act many people with physical and sensory disabilities and impairments also lived in hospitals and other large institutions in which the focus was their physical care
What approach was there less awareness for?
there was less awareness of the need for a HOLISTIC approach, with those having a disability being separate from the wider community
What is a sensory impairment?
a sensory impairment refers to a condition where a person’s sensory organs (eg eyesight or hearing function) are abnormally poor and limits their abilities to perform day to day tasks
When may a person with impairments only be disabled?
a person with impairments may only be disabled if adaptations are not in place to ensure that they can perform day to day tasks and live life independently
What is a disabling environment?

a disabling environment describes a situation where appropriate adaptations and services are not in place to support their impairments
- eg someone with a hearing impairment is only disabled if they don’t have access to a hearing aid
