WHY IS IT IMPORTANT THAT WE UNDERSTAND THE OTHER ROLES AND DEPARTMENTS?
To be able to work effectively as a team and understand who is in charge of different roles. We will also have to collaborate on design ideas.
Purpose of a call sheet?
Daily schedule within
filming for the cast and crew.
A scene list.
Purpose of a script?
The storyline for the production.
What are the different types of productions a makeup artist could work within?
Tv drama, film , fashion , adverts, documentary, catwalk, theatre, horror, comedy etc…
What different job roles can you come across within the industry who you may need to work with?
Set designer, stylist, costume department, agents, performers/ actors, music technician, director, producer, assistants, runners, light technician, sound engineer, editor, prop master etc…
What is the importance of attending regular meeting with different departments?
To ensure that everyone is on the same page with ideas, to avoid confusion and to know what is going on with the production demands and time scale.

Why does a makeup artist need to consider lighting?
The overall effect on the makeup. What lighting will be used when the makeup is applied? What lighting is used for filming? is the shot outside/ inside? Day or night?
Why does a makeup artist need to consider costume?
Understand adjustments that need to be made due to makeup application and knowing the characters. Makeup applied before or after the costume applied?
What does Suitability of the design mean?
Does the makeup / hair design for the character fit the model/ performer which is allocated the role? Having images of the model prior is essential
What is the purpose of a Cast and crew list ?
List of all the cast and crews details . ?How many cast are there to design looks for? Is they enough artists?
What is a Shooting schedule ?
Allows artist to know what to plan for and what to order for when.List of a the different scenes to be shot and the order they may be shot in.
How do we ensure Confidentiality and what does it mean?
Ensuring we are not sharing person information about the model or production. Following the Data protection Act all sensitive information will be handled with care, locked away and stored out of sight. A non disclosure may be signed by the artist to ensure this.
What is On – set etiquette?
Knowing how to act, communicate and behave on set. Come with the correct kit and know the shooting schedule.
What is text analysis?
Allowing the makeup artist to interpret the words the writer has given to transform them into live action
What is design analysis?
This involves analysing the space, costumes and props you see when you watch a show.
What is Script breakdown ?
A breakdown of each scene within a script to understand each character in detail.
What is Continuity?
Maintaining details throughout filming to ensure they are consistent from shot to shot (or scene). For example you may shoot on a Friday scene 6 and seven, however on the Saturday shoot scene 8 - the makeup must look the same in scene 8 as it did in scene 7.
What is interpretation of character role?
An understanding of how a character will be presented.
What does costings and budgeting mean within a production?
List of products and tools to create a costing list.
A set amount of money allocated to a department.
Being able to adapt a look based off the budget.
Would be involved within the design team discussion and what would this look like?
Meeting with teams that designed the set, backdrops, stage, management, makeup and hair
What personal and profession attributes (skills and strengths) must a makeup artist have to be successful working within the industry?
TIME MANAGEMENT, FLEXIBILITY, CONFIDENCE, CONFIDENTIALITY, RELABILITY, PROFESSIONALISM, PERSON PRESENTATION, ORGANISATION, CREATIVITY, RESEARCH SKILLS, FORWARD PLANNING, CURRENT KNOWLEGE, TROUBLE SHOOTING SKILLS.
