The Health and Safety at Work Act

Covers health and safety in theworkplace. This act is designed toprotect workers and members of thepublic.
The Environmental Protection Act
This requires that anyone who isdisposing of waste must do so
safelyin a way that does not damage theenvironment.
The Control of
Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)
Ensuring that substances that could be harmfulto yourself or the public are:
-Stored correctly.
–Provide guidelines for how they should be stored and used.
-Products should be identified by symbols.
-Risk assessments should be carried out.
The Electricity at Work Regulations
This ensures that precautions are taken against therisk of death or injury from electricity within thework place.
Companies and employers must take responsibilityof the safety and of electricity
procedures..
Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations
Employers must complete riskassessment to ensure steps are taken toreduce the risk from fire.
-Identifying risks and danger.
-Considering who may be at risk.
-Storing flammable materials effectively.
-Creating a plan to deal with anemergency.
The Employers Liability Act
An employer is responsible for their employees.
Employers liability insurance will cover an employer if their employee has an injury or illness due to health and safety in the work place not being implemented correctly.
-The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulation
Provides guidance to employers on how to provide first aid to employees within the work place.
-Training for first aiders
-Maintenance and provision of first aid kit, equipment etc.
-First aid regulations for self-employed.
-Cases were first aid regulations do not apply.
-The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulation (PPE)
Regulation states that all employers must provide suitable personal protective equipment (PPE).
Could include: aprons, gloves, masks, eye protection and uniforms.
The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulation (RIDDOR)
This required companies and employers to report serious workplace accidents, including:
-Work related deaths.
-Injuries.
-Diseases caused by exposure within the work place.
-Near miss accidents which could have causes harm or serious illness.
The Consumer Protection Act
The Consumer Protection Act 1987 gives you the right to claim compensation against the producer of a defective product if it has caused damage, death or personal injury
-The Data Protection Act
This requires employers to protect the data given by a living person.
The act controls how a company or organisation can use the information and store it.
Written information should be locked away and laptops password protected.
-The Equality Act
This act protects people from being discriminated against in the workplace. This provide equal opportunities for all:
-Races, gender, disability, religious beliefs, sexual orientation and age.
