WORKING METHODS/ MATERIALS/ USE OF MEDIA/ TECHNIQUES 1
In ‘Reverse’, there is a contrast in textures. The face has been painted with thick, expressive brushstrokes which contrasts with the thin and more delicate brushstrokes of the operating table. This creates a contrast in texture from rough to smooth and shiny, representing the table she is lying on.

‘No Woman no Cry’ is painted on a rough canvas. Ofili used a mixed resin which he poured onto the work while it was sitting horizontally. He then tipped the canvas up before drying, creating streaks of resin that are visible around its edges. This gives the painting it highly textural look and gives it high visual impact.

In ‘Reverse’, quick, expressive, visible brushstrokes give the painting a frenzied look, making it uncomfortable for the viewer. These short, sharp, directional lines makes the woman’s face look as though her skin is choppy from the surgical procedure. Saville used thick paint in order to represent flesh.
