TONE Flashcards
TONE 1
In ‘No Woman no Cry’, the woman’s face is made up of a series of small, equally spaced, brown dots. There is therefore a lack of tone. This makes the painting look flat and unrealistic.
TONE 2
Saville has used a large variety of tone within the painting which adds to its
mood and atmosphere. The darker red tones represent where the blood has dried whereas the lighter red tones represent the fresh blood from surgery. This variety of tone adds to the violence of the image.
TONE 3
Saville has paid close attention to shadows and highlights which make the face look as though it has form. The dark tones under her cheek make the head look as though it has weight. The lighter tones on the top of her neck and head show there is a strong light source from above her.
