SUBJECT MATTER Flashcards
Subject Matter 1
In ‘Reverse’ we see a full face of a woman lying side on as well as the top of her naked shoulder. The woman takes up most of the composition. At the bottom of the painting in the foreground, there is a reflection of her face on a shiny surgical operating table, giving name to the painting, ‘Reverse’.
Subject Matter 2
In ‘Reverse’, the woman looks dazed, her eyes staring right out at the viewer
as if she is wanting them to help her. This makes the viewer feel uncomfortable. There is no one else visible in the background. This is to
symbolise that the woman is alone.
Subject Matter 3
‘No Woman, No Cry’ is a very large painting that shows a crying woman. The woman, who has dark hair and black skin, is shown in profile. Pale blue tears fall from each of her eyes, which all contain very small collaged photographs of a boy’s face. This shows the source of her sadness.
