WMM Overview

A

Phonological Loop (‘Inner Ear’) & the Visuo-Spatial Sketchpad (‘Inner Eye’).
Phonological stored by the phonological store
VSS stored by Visual Cache
These are both managed by the Central Executive. This CE doesn’t handle memories itself, but allocates them to either the VSS or the PL
Episodic Buffer was later added by Baddeley. This is a 3rd system that essentially binds info from the VSS & loop into one memory to be stored in our episodic LTM

Q

SODA

A

S - Lots of supporting research, e.g. Dual Task Paradigm (Can’t process 2 sets of information at the same time e.g. 2 stories, but can deal with them if they are separate e.g. playing on PS4 & listening to mum).

KF could remember visually but not auditory info suggests they are seperate

O - The model is based on lab experiments involving dual tasks. Cocktail Party Effect states we can’t process 2 convos at once, yet IRL we use other senses e.g. body language to understand. Therefore lacks ecological validity

D - WMM is v similar to MSM. could say that Working Memory just replaces the STM of the MSM w/ the idea that info arrives from the senses and is then encoded into LTM

A - Can be used to improve memory in some situations. e.g. if trying to concentrate on something on TV, remove competing info. such as the radio
