Contemporary Study - Sebastian-Hernandez Gil (2012) Flashcards
APFC
A - To investigate the phonological loop within children aged 5-17
P - 570 Volunteers from Madrid schools. None had impairments. Divided into 5 age groups, an average digit span was recorded for age and age group. Digits read out at 1 per second. Span was recorded as the maximum number that was recalled without error.
F - Digit Span increases w age. Starts low at 5, rising steadily to 11, it then becomes stable at 15-17
C - Elderly Ppts. much higher span than 5 year olds. Those with advanced dementia had a similar span to younger ages. Digit span was lower in Spanish people than Anglo-Saxon s, yet this was decided to be a result of Spanish numbers containing more syllables
GRAVE
G - Large sample size of 570 reduces anomaly impact
R - Standardised means easily replicable (one second between words)
A - Sometimes used to explain real-life cognitive skills. Found high digit span means higher general intelligence (Gignac & Weiss 2016)
V - Internal validity possibly affected as parents were required to state any impairments rather than ppts. tested for them
E - Presumptive consent
