working memory model Flashcards
1
Q
what is the WMM?
A
an explanation of how STM is organised and how it functions
2
Q
what components are in the WMM?
A
- visuo-spatial sketchpad (vss)
- central executive
- episodic bugffer
- long term emery
- phonological loop (articulacy control system and phonological store)
3
Q
what is the central executive (CE)
A
- attentional process that monitors incoming data
- allocates slave systems to tasks
- very limited storage capacity
4
Q
what is the phonological loop?
A
- consists of phonological store and articulatory control system
deals with auditory info and preserves the order info arrives in - phonological stores words
- articulatory allows maintenance rehearsal (Repeating sounds to remember)
5
Q
what is the visuo-spatial sketchpad (VSS)?
A
- stores usual or spatial info when required
- logie (95) divided it into visual cache (visual data) and inner scribe ((arrangement of objects in visual field)
6
Q
what is the episodic buffer (EB)?
A
- added in 2000
- temporary store for information
- integrates visual, spatial and verbal info into other stores
- maintains sense of time sequencing (episodes) - links to LTM
7
Q
+ clinical evidence/ case studies
A
- shalice and Warrington (70) studied patient KF with damage to hippocampus
- STM verbal ability was poor but visual fine, showing damage to only phonological loop (separate stores)
8
Q
+ Dual task performance
A
Baddeley (75) show it was more difficult to do 2 visual tasks than a visual and verbal task at the same time
- both actions aren’t coming from same slave system
(support operate function of VSS)
9
Q
- lack of clarity over central executive
A
- the comps ent doest explain anything
- Baddeley (03) said its important but not understood (some believe it has separate components)
- WMM not fully explained
