working memory model Flashcards
features of central executive
- overall control
- delegates tasks
- coordinates when multitasking
- involved in complex decisions
coding of central executive
modality free
capacity of central executive
limited
features of phonological loop
- auditory info
- 2 elements
phonological store = speech perception, holds speech info, duration = 1 sec
articulatory process = speech production, rehearses verbal info
what is coding of phonological loop
acoustic
what is the capacity of phonological loop
2 seconds
features of visuo spatial sketchpad
- spatial visuo info
- stores info by organising it in a visual way
- visuocache stores info for colour and form
- innerscribe = spatial and movement
coding for visuo spatial sketchpad
visual
capacity for visuo spatial sketchpad
3-4 objects
features of episodic buffer
- added by Baddeley in 2000
- coordinates and manipulates info from all three stores as well as LTM
coding for episodic buffer
modality free
capacity for episodic buffer
four chunks
what does PL stand for
phonological loop
what does CE stand for
central executive
what is VSS
visuo spatial sketchpad
what is EB
episodic buffer
strengths of the model
1) KF can support. after motorcycle accident he had difficulties recalling verbal info but no visual
2) robbins chess study. pps given second task using the VSS or CE has negative effects. PL had no effect. chess involves use of CE and VSS but not PL.
weaknesses of the model
1) dont know much on CE. very little evidence and difficult to falsify
2) evidence which questions understanding of WMM and CE. case study of brain tumour removal. cognitive fine social decision making impaired. must be a more complex explanation
