types of long term memory Flashcards

1

Q

what is semantic memory

A

our knowledge of the world which is a combination of dictionary and encyclopedia
- not personal (facts we all share)
e.g. capital of brazil

Q

what is procedural memory

A

memory for actions and skills - how we do things
- acquired through practise
- automatic/ implicit
e.g. driving a car

Q

strengths

A

1) CW adds support for separate memory stores - could play piano but couldn’t remember wife leaving or taste of food. episodic and semantic damages but procedural not. added validity
2) support from brain scan studies. tulving used PET scans and got pps to carry out tasks. Semantic and procedural recalled from prefrontal cortex whereas procedural was from cerebellum. conscious v unconscious recall

Q

weaknesses

A

1) cohen and squire proposed there were only 2 stores. non declarative and declarative. Evidence = CW + brain scans. more research
2) maybe a fourth type. responsible for priming (exposure to one stimulus influences the response to another) more research needs to be conducted.
