cognitive interview Flashcards
what are the four steps of the cognitive interview
1) report everything
2) reinstate context
3) reverse order
4) change perspective
what are witnesses asked to do in RE part
include every single detail of event even if it seems irrelevant or pps don’t feel confident
how does RE aid recall
- other memories can be triggered from trivial details
- reduce opportunity for leading questions
what are witnesses asked to do in RC part
return to crime scene in mind and imagine the environment
how does RC aid recall
- allows for context and state dependant retrieval by increasing cues which will trigger recall
what are witnesses asked to do in RO part
recalled in a different chronological order e.g. backwards or middle
how does RO aid recall
prevents expectations / schemes of events effect recall
- prevents dishonesty
- opens up retrieval pathways
what are witnesses asked to do in CP part
witness is asked to recall events from another perspective e.g. another witness
how does CP aid recall
- disrupts the effect of expectations + schema on recal
what are the strengths of the cognitive recall
1) not all techniques are needed. each element on its own is more valuable than standard interview. shortened version in limited time
2) effectiveness of enhanced CI. conducted meta analysis. ECI proved more accurate than SI. important in convincing police who hadn’t used it yet
