working memory model Flashcards
what are the two roles of the inner scribe?
1) consider spatial arrangements of shapes
2) act as a rehearsal system
what is the role of the visual cache?
stores visual information
what are two roles of the phonological loop?
1) to store audibly presented material
2) to be used in conversations
what does the articulatory control system do?
constantly rehearses information (through the inner voice) to prevent forgetting from decaying via maintenance reearsal to store in sound
what is the phonological loop?
a storage system, with a 2s capacity, that deals with auditory information
what is the vssp?
- a system allowing us to create images either based on something we see in the present or past time
- the visuospatial sketchpad has a limited (3-4 objects) capacity
what are the 3 functions of the central excecutive?
1) focus attention
2) inhibition
3) shifting attention
what is focus attention?
the function that allows us to switch our attention between two things
what is inhibition?
the function that allows us to tune out any irrelevant information
what is shifting attention?
the function that allows us to divide our attention between two tasks
what is the central excecutive?
- a system that controls and passes information onto the subsystems
- has no storage system of its own
- has non specific modality
- involved in problem solving and decision making
how does the c.e have “non speciific modality” ?
can process any of the 5 senses
what is the name of the process that takes place in the articulatory control system?
subvocal rehearsal
what does the episodic buffer do?
to bind memories together into singleepisodes, which then get stored inthe episodic LTM
what is the working memory model?
a model used to explain how STM is a multi-functional store which divides and separates sensory information into differing sub-systems
