experimental designs Flashcards
1) what are independent measures?
2) why are they used?
1) where a group of participants are allocated to either experimental conditions
2) to record and compare findings
1) what are repeated measures?
2) why are they used?
1)) where a group of participants are exposed to both conditions
2) to record and compare findings
what are matched pairs?
where participants are tested on to gather results and then are paired depending on the similar scores
how are matched pairs and independent measures similar?
one of the matched pair is put into the experimental condition, while the other is put into the control condition
what are the strengths and weaknesses of repeated measures?
- strengths -> fewer participants needed to be recruited as they are used in both conditions
- weakness -> order effects -> e.g displaying demand characteristics and tiredness
what are the strengths and weaknesses of independent measures?
strengths -> there are no order effects as they’re only doing one condition
weakness -> there is potential for error due to individual difference
what are the strengths and weaknesses of matched pairs?
- strength -> there are no order effects (one condition)
- individual differences are reduced
- weakness -> it can be time consuming and expensive
