what is reconstructive memory?
the idea that memory is not exact and is distorted by existing schemas OR what we already know about the world
what is confabulation?
the idea schemas fill in the gaps in our memory
what is assimilation?
taking in new information as one’s own, and changing our schemas to fit what we have learned
what is accommodation?
where we change our memories to keep our schemas intact
what is rationalisation?
when we add details into our recall to give a reason for something that may have not originally fitted with the schema
what is simplification?
when specific details are missed out as we don’t fully understnad them or haven’t paid enough attention to them
what are the three characters of schemas?
1) assimilation
2) accomodation
3) confabulation
wha is the schema theory?
a branch of cognitive science concerned with how the brain structures knowledge
what is a schema?
- an organized unit of knowledge for a subject or even, based on past experiences
what is levelling?
levelling involves removing or downplaying details from a memory
what is sharpening?
sharpening involves adding or exaggerating details
how do we accommodate our memories?
by levelling and sharpening
