Working Memory Model Flashcards
Central Executive
Monitors incoming data and decides what needs to be done and when delegates tasks accordingly to the slave system. Codes any type of info. Takes over most demanding task. Very limited capacity
Phonological Loop
Auditory Info is passed CE to PL.
Phonological store - stores the words we hear (inner ear)
Articulatory loop - silently repeats words we seen or heard to keep them in memory (inner voice)
Visuo Spatial Sketchpad
Visual info is passed from CE to VSS (inner eye)
Setting mental images and is what you use if you must plan a spatial task ie giving directions.
Episodic Buffer
EB collects and combines information from the CE,PL and VSS to record an event.
EB transfers information to LTM and used to retrieve information from the LTM to the STM.
RTS WMM was conducted by Shallice and Warrington on patient KF who suffered amnesia
Found KF recall in STM for digits were poor when the digits were read out loud but was better when he could visually see the digits. Supporting WMM because it suggest that there must be different stores within the STM.
Studies of dual task performance supports that there are separate components within the the STM and that they have limited capacity.
Baddeley found ppts had more difficulty when performing two visual task at the same time than when performing one visual task or one visual task with a verbal task. Suggesting both visual task are competing for limited capacity for the same slave system.
