24 undergraduate students were briefly presented with consonant trigram to remember. Were given a 3 digit number and asked to count backward to prevent rehearsal. They were stopped at different intervals to recall the trigram

After 3 sec 80% recalled the trigram correctly. After 18 seconds fewer than 10% recalled correctly. STM lasts between 18 to 30 sec

Tested 392 America high school graduates aged between 17 and 94 on their memory of their former classmates. Condition 1 they had to recall the name with a yearbook photo. Condition 2 they had to recall with no photo cues.

The task of recalling consonant trigram is artificial. It is difficult to generalise the findings to a real life example as the research doesn’t reflect most real life memory activities where we are trying remember something meaningful.
