Working memory model Flashcards
What is the working memory model (WMM)
Baddley and Hitch
STM is too simple in MSM
Dual task performance - 2 tasks using same component decreases performance for both tasks
What does the central executive do
Coordinates STM activity/which component requires more attention
Delegates info to other components
Decision making
Reasoning
Problem solving
What does the phonological loop do
Auditory info
Made up of phonological store and articulatory process
Phonological store - Holds words heard for 1-2s
Articulatory process - Holds words heard or seen/ rehearses them for maintenance
What does the visuo spatial sketchpad do
Deals with/stores visual and spatial info
Mental planning
Made up of Inner scribe and Visual cache
Visual cache - Stores visual info
Inner scribe - Spatial relations/awareness
What does the episodic buffer do
Collects all info and puts it in 1 event
Passes event to LTM
Evaluate Baddeley and Hitch’s WMM
Patient EVR - Cerebellum removed - Good reasoning tasks/poor decision making - questions CE
Episodic buffer is too simple
Shallice and Warrington - Patient KF - Info can be encoded acoustically/visually
Nomothetic vs ideographic
