Types of long term memory Flashcards
What is declarative memory
Can be explained
Episodic and semantic memory
Explicit
What is non declarative memory
Can’t be explained
Easier to show
Procedural memory
Implicit
What did Tulving suggest
MSM view of LTM is too simple
LTM has 3 stores
Describe the episodic memory store
Explicit Personal memories Complex Time stamped Conscious effort to recall
Describe semantic memory
Explicit
General knowledge
Not time stamped
Consciously recalled
Describe procedural memory
Implicit How to carry out actions Recalled automatically(skills are automatic with practise) Difficult to explain Easy to show
Evaluate Tulvings research on LTM stores
Supporting evidence - Patient HM - Hippocampus removed, couldn’t form episodic or semantic memories but could form procedural memories(tested through mirror drawing)
Too reliant on case studies - difficult to say that a damaged area causes specific problems e.g. area may be acting as a relay
Brain scans show each LTM store is located in different areas - Episodic = hippocampus. Semantic = temporal lobe. Procedural = cerebellum
Nomothetic vs ideographic
