What is confirming communication
Recognition, acknowledgement, endorsement
positive types of messages that have the best chance of being perceived as confirming
What is disconfirming communication
Aggressiveness, ostracism
messages that leave your communication partner feeling invalidated or disrespected and, ultimately not listened to.
Levels of confirming communication
- Recognition - indicating your awareness of the other person (eye contact)
- Acknowledgment - paying attention to ideas, feelings of others (stronger than recognition)
- Endorsement - means you agree or support the persons ideas or feelings.
What are the levels of disconfirming communication
- Aggressive - demeans the worth of the other person and damage the relationship
- Ostracism - ignoring someone or excluding them from the group
What do we need to consider when giving feedback
That it is focused on the behaviour and not the person. Use empathy, equality, acknowledge that there may be a better way. (Use words such as maybe or possibly)
Types of leadership
- Designated leader - team leader, manager, rn, lpn
- Emergent leader - chosen by the group can be formal or informal
- Distributed leadership - shared leadership people share the role
