Benefits of paraphrasing
-Allows you to ensure the speakers message was received as intended
-it draws out more information from the speaker - is that what you mean
-reduces the heat out of intense discussions
Difference between empathy and sympathy
Empathy - experiencing the others perception (temporarily become the person)
Sympathy - having compassion for another persons circumstances but from your own point of view
Benefits of questioning
-Clarify meaning
-Learn about persons thoughts/feelings
-Gather more detailed information
-Encourage elaboration or clarification on a topic
What are closed questions and example
Allows for yes/no answers and is used when precise specific information is wanted.
Ex. Whats your doctors name?
What time do you go to bed?
What is open-ended questions and an example
Allow for more detailed responses. Used when wanting to clarify meanings.
Ex. What did you mean when you said it felt weird?
