Knowledge points
Many women worked in jobs previously done by men including: tram and bus conductors, typists, secretaries and over 200,000 women were employed in Government departments
- allowed more men to fight whilst proving women were helpful and capable
700,000 women were employed in munitions industry- showing they were not afraid to contribute to the war effort
Positive analysis
Helped women gain the vote:
Demonstrating that women could complete challenging and dangerous tasks in munitions factories, breaking down the argument that women were too weak to vote.
Billboards around Britain “The nation thanks the women”- showing that people noticed and appreciated their efforts
Negative analysis
Not main reason in gaining women the vote:
Women given the vote were over 30 and many women who helped during the war weee under that age.
Evaluation
Suffragette campaign gained women the vote to a larger extent as the suffragettes campaign used militant tactics such as putting acid on golf courses and post boxes or setting fire to buildings- causing the government to be threatened by the suffragettes campaign + fear it restarting after the war, forcing the government to provide women with the vote
Suffragettes efforts- not put to waste, their effects remained after the war
War merely delayed the vote- temporarily restricted the threat of the suffragette campaign
