Suffragist Campaign Flashcards
Knowledge
Peaceful tactics such as: handing out pamphlets, organising marches, sending petitions to government and getting MPs to introduce bills on their behalf, this gained attention and consideration for their cause
The number of members of their campaign has increased from 6000 to 53000 in just 5 years proving they had support.
Positive Analysis
Their tactics helped women to gain the vote in 1918 as they gained a positive reputation for women suffrage, presenting women as responsible and law abiding and therefore worthy of the vote, some claim that they had gained the support of 50% of MPs showing that their tactics were influential
Negative analysis
However they were less successful as they argued that not all men and women should get the vote which undoubtedly weakened their cause:
“Suffragists would probably have done better to have common cause with all Unenfranchised men and women from the start and thereby they might have extended their appeal”
This proves that they limited their support
Evaluation
While the suffragists were an important reason for women gaining the vote the suffragette campaign was a more important reason, to a larger extent
The suffragist campaign was too moderate and did not gain enough attention, causing them to be too slow and gradually lose support as the government dropped the bills proposed by the suffragists for votes for women. This forced people to join the suffragettes that used militant tactics “Deeds not words” to gain them attention faster from politicians and newspapers- allowing women to gain the vote in 1918
