Q

Positive analysis

A

This helped women to gain the vote as Britain did not want to appear backwards compared to the other countries, putting pressure on Britain to enfranchise women.

Britain claimed to be “Mother of Democracy” this meant that Britain may have been forced to give women the vote to avoid appearing hypocritical.

Q

Negative analysis

A

However this was not the main reason for women gaining the vote as women and the suffrage campaign was not using the situation of other countries to put Britain under pressure and persuade Britain to grant women the vote.
Many other countries did influence Britain’s decision to give women the vote then they would have given women the vote long before 1918

Q

Evaluation

A

The suffragette campaign is a more important factor than this to a larger extent because they were persistent in gaining publicity for the cause by having marters for their cause such as Emily Davison who died after running in front of the kings horse with a suffragette flag. This attracted immediate attention from the government highlighting the importance of votes for women rather than it being overlooked like it was when other countries set examples
