Work Done Flashcards
What is work done?
When a force causes an object to move a distance, work is done on the object. Work done is equal to the amount of energy transferred to the object
Work done equation
Work done (J) = force (N) x distance (m)
Unit of work
One joule of work is done on an object when a force of 1N causes its displacement to change by 1m (1J = 1Nm)
Power
The rate at which work is done
Power equation
Power (W) = work done (J) / time (s)
How is energy transferred as a man pushes a box along the floor?
Energy provided by the man is transferred by friction to the thermal energy stores of the box and ground. If the box isn’t speeding up or slowing down, there must be an equal and opposite force acting on it
