Solids, Liquids And Gases Flashcards
Solid
-packed closely (regular structure)
-particles held together by strong bonds (forces)
-particles vibrate about fixed positions
Liquid
-packed closely (difficult to compress)
-particles held by weaker bonds than in solids
-particles flow around one another
Gas
-separated by relatively large distances
-very weak forces between particles
-particles move randomly
-can expand and compress
What are changes of state?
Physical changes (reversible) that change the internal energy of a substance, conserving the mass
Solid —> gas
Sublimation
What is the internal energy of a system?
The total kinetic and potential energy of all the particles it contains
Increasing internal energy…
Latent heat is being supplied to allow for a change of state
Decreasing internal energy…
Latent heat is being released to allow for a change of state
