Induced And Permanent Magnets Flashcards
Permanent magnets
Permanent magnets produce their own magnetic field and always have a N and S pole. They can be attracted AND repelled by another magnet
Induced magnets
Induced magnets only become magnetic when placed into a magnetic field. They are only ever attracted to a permanent magnet
How can a bar magnet, a piece of iron and paper clips be used to make an induced magnet?
Place the piece of iron in contact with the magnet/ in its magnetic field. Use the magnet to make the iron a temporary magnet. The paper clips will now be attracted to the iron. Use the first paper clip to pick up another paper clip. If the magnet is removed, the paper clips are no longer attracted and fall off
