Magnetic Fields Flashcards
What can we use plotting compasses for?
To investigate the magnetic field around a bar magnet
Magnetic fields
The region around a magnet where it will exert a force on another magnet or magnetic material (iron, steel, cobalt, nickel)
Uniform magnetic fields
Same strength and direction everywhere
Earth’s magnetic field
Magnetic north is in the Southern Hemisphere. A compass needle will point in the direction of earth’s magnetic field. The North Pole of a compass will point to earth’s magnetic South Pole
Magnetic field around a current carrying wire
When a current flows through a wire, a magnetic field will be produced round the wire. We can use iron filings as they line up parallel to the magnetic field
What determines the strength of the magnetic field?
-size of current
-distance from wire
Right hand grip rule
Thumb - direction of current
Other fingers - direction of magnetic field
Attraction and repulsion
The poles of a magnet are the places where the magnetic forces it can exert are strongest. When two magnets are brought together they exert a force on one another (opposite poles attract, same repel)
